Managing Asthma

OVERVIEW

While there is no cure for asthma, there are many ways to manage your asthma and make it so that your asthma doesn’t stop you from enjoying your life. This involves taking medications and learning to avoid the triggers that cause your symptoms.

How is Asthma Treated?

There are a few different medications that your doctor may prescribe you, depending on your form of asthma and how severe your asthma is. Your doctor will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will work best for you. Some medications can include:

  • Corticosteroids - These are controller medications that are taken daily and include inhaled medications.
  • Anticholinergics - These are inhaled medications that help in opening the airways and are used as maintenance therapy.
  • Leukotriene Modifiers - These are oral medications.

Avoiding Triggers

It’s important to try and avoid triggers as best as possible. Some of the most common triggers include:

  • Asthma
  • Exercise
  • Allergies
  • Pets
  • Pollen
  • Cockroach Allergens

It’s important to work with your doctor to create an action plan so that you know exactly what to do during an attack and so that you and your doctor can determine what medication will work best for you.
